Detecting scent...

Scent Detection focuses on developing the dog's natural air-scenting ability. The dog(s) will develop their noses, identify various scents with an associated name, retrieve (or find) those scents upon command, and identify the scent commanded over similar scents.
Scent detection is generally used indoors, or enclosed areas, although the air-scenting ability can be used anywhere. The dog becomes trained to identify a scent then detect its presence and whereabouts by scent particles that are released into the air from the object.

When using the air-scenting ability in conjunction with search and/or rescue dogs, it is recommended that the dog also be trained in tracking for more versatility.
Whether you are considering training a narcotics dog, a building search dog, a hunting dog, an assistance dog, or a dog to help locate certain persons or objects (and retrieve them), scent detection will be an important function to your dog's training. Most of all, it is fun, and creates a job for our dog's need to work.
You and your dog will be required to have the minimum of on-leash, off-leash and soft mouth retrieval.
